Periodontics is the part of dentistry that specialises in the treatment of the periodontium, i.e., the supporting tissues of the tooth: gum, bone tissue, cement and periodontal ligament.
Bacterial infections and parasites may cause periodontal problems, such as bad breath (halitosis), inflammation of the gum (gingivitis), or loosening of the teeth (periodontitis).
Some people have a higher risk of loosening teeth than others, due to their having one or more of the following characteristics:
• Family history of periodontics
• Stressful situations and the accompanying anxiety
• Excessive use of tobacco
• Medical condition where the subject is susceptible to infections
• Resistance to tooth decay
• History of severe gum infection (gingivitis).
